Freed from US jail, top immunologist picked up where he left off – in China

Immunologist Song Guo Zheng, who was previously imprisoned in the US under the controversial "China Initiative," has successfully rebuilt his career in Shanghai. He is now a chair professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, leading a research team focused on autoimmune diseases and cancer.

Zheng's case was one of the most high-profile under the "China Initiative," a program launched during the Trump administration to counter alleged Chinese espionage. Though never found guilty of intellectual property theft, he was imprisoned for failing to disclose his ties to China and ordered to repay millions in research funds. Following his release in 2023, Zheng joined Shanghai Jiao Tong University and also heads a new institute backed by the university and the local government.
