China creates hacker-proof quantum satellite communication link with South Africa

China has successfully extended ultra-secure quantum communication to the southern hemisphere for the first time, establishing a quantum key distribution link with South Africa. This achievement, announced by scientist Yin Juan, marks a significant step towards creating an intercontinental communication network virtually impervious to hacking, with potential applications in finance and national defense.

The 12,800km demonstration between Beijing and South Africa was facilitated by China's quantum communication satellites, including the Mozi satellite launched in 2016. This milestone builds upon previous successes, such as the secure "quantum call" between China and Austria in 2017, and represents the first implementation of secure quantum key distribution in the southern hemisphere.
