Tencent’s Weixin Pay chases Chinese tourists in Singapore with Sentosa deal

Tencent's Weixin Pay is expanding into Southeast Asia to capitalize on the resurgence of Chinese tourism following the pandemic. This move aims to diversify beyond a sluggish domestic market by catering to the preferences of Chinese tourists who are accustomed to using mobile payment platforms like Weixin Pay and Alipay.

Weixin Pay is focusing on serving local merchants in Southeast Asia to better accommodate Chinese tourists. The platform, known as WeChat Pay overseas, has already established a presence in Singapore since 2018, with over 100,000 local merchants integrated into its ecosystem. A recent strategic partnership with Singapore's Sentosa Development Corporation and CapitaLand Group seeks to integrate services on Sentosa Island into WeChat's domestic ecosystem, addressing the needs of the growing number of Chinese tourists, who represent Singapore's largest source of tourism.
