Hong Kong urged to make Northern Metropolis ‘special zone’ to speed up work
Starry Lee Wai-king, Hong Kong's delegate to the National People's Congress Standing Committee, has proposed designating the Northern Metropolis as a "special zone" with a separate, expedited approval process to accelerate its development. Lee emphasized the slow pace of construction, particularly concerning the Hong Kong portion of the innovation hub co-developed with Shenzhen in Hetao, and suggested that infrastructure projects like railways should be completed much faster than the current timelines.
Lee's proposal aims to streamline the bureaucratic processes that currently hinder development in the Northern Metropolis, a government initiative to transform 30,000 hectares in the New Territories into a new economic and housing hub. In the same interview, Lee also addressed criticism of CK Hutchison Holdings' Panama Canal ports sale, highlighting the importance of businesses considering national interests when making deals, especially given recent commentaries from key Beijing offices.
