A jury found the 72-year-old Miramax film studio co-founder sexually assaulted former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and raped aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013. They are among more than 80 women who have accused him of sexual misconduct.
He was sentenced to 23 years in prison, but the New York Court of Appeals in April found that Judge James Burke, who presided over the trial, made a critical mistake by allowing three women to testify about alleged sexual assaults by Weinstein that were not part of the criminal charges against him.

He was sentenced to 23 years in prison, but the New York Court of Appeals in April found that Judge James Burke, who presided over the trial, made a critical mistake by allowing three women to testify about alleged sexual assaults by Weinstein that were not part of the criminal charges against him.
The court said that testimony about “prior bad acts” violated his right to a fair trial.
Weinstein has denied having non-consensual encounters with anyone. Arthur Aidala, Weinstein’s lawyer, said on Tuesday it was unfair for prosecutors to seek to add additional victims to the case after the conviction was overturned.
“Once again we have a hotline: ‘1-800 Get Harvey’,” Aidala said in court.
Weinstein is suffering from a host of medical problems while being held in solitary confinement at New York City’s Rikers Island prison, Aidala said. He accused prosecutors of using delay tactics to keep Weinstein incarcerated, which Blumberg denied.
“As we said in 2020, there were women who were not ready to proceed with the legal process. Some of those women are now ready to proceed,” Blumberg said.
Prosecutors would be ready to try the case in the autumn, Blumberg said, but no trial date was set. Weinstein is expected back in court on July 19.
Weinstein was also sentenced to 16 years in prison following a separate rape trial in California. That conviction was not affected by the New York court’s decision, and he has not begun serving the California sentence.
Miramax’s hit films included Shakespeare in Love and Pulp Fiction. Weinstein’s own eponymous film studio filed for bankruptcy in March 2018.

Wang, 41, has long worked for NGOs that support vulnerable groups, including advocating for the rights of workers with occupational diseases.
According to an indictment posted on an account set up on X, formerly Twitter, by friends of the pair last year, the official charges appeared to focus on gatherings hosted by the two since late 2020.
People who were at those gatherings said they discussed social issues, including women’s and LGBT rights. They also watched films and played board games together.
The indictment also alleged that Huang “propagated the ideology of subverting state power” by publishing articles online from 2019.
It also stated that Huang provided online training that “used major events and social movements at home and abroad to incite participants’ dissatisfaction with state power”.
Another notable subversion case in China this year was the sentencing of rights activist Li Qiaochu to three years and eight months in prison in February.

The film chronicled the detrimental physical and psychological effects of Spurlock eating only McDonald’s food for 30 days. He gained about 25 pounds, saw a spike in his cholesterol and lost his sex drive.
He returned in 2019 with “Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!” – a sober look at an industry that processes 9 billion animals a year in America.
“We’re at an amazing moment in history from a consumer standpoint where consumers are starting to have more and more power,” he told Associated Press in 2019. “It’s not about return for the shareholders. It’s about return for the consumers.”
Spurlock was a gonzo-like filmmaker who leaned into the bizarre and ridiculous. His stylistic touches included zippy graphics and amusing music, blending a Michael Moore-ish camera-in-your-face style with his own sense of humour and pathos.
“I wanted to be able to lean into the serious moments. I wanted to be able to breathe in the moments of levity. We want to give you permission to laugh in the places where it’s really hard to laugh,” he said.
After he exposed the fast-food and chicken industries, there was an explosion in restaurants stressing freshness, artisanal methods, farm-to-table goodness and ethically sourced ingredients. But nutritionally, not much had changed.
“There has been this massive shift and people say to me, ‘So has the food gotten healthier?’ And I say, ‘Well, the marketing sure has,’” he said.
Not all his work dealt with food. Spurlock made documentaries about the boy band One Direction and the geeks and fanboys at Comic-Con. One of his films looked at life behind bars at the Henrico County Jail in Virginia.
In “POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold,” Spurlock tackled questions of product placement, marketing and advertising. With “Where in the World is Osama bin Laden?” Spurlock goes on a global search to find the al-Qaeda leader.
